Louis Philipp Maass was born on May 6, 1857, in Berlin, Germany, the child of Philipp Levin and Röschen Wolff. He had two sons and one daughter with Henriette Lachmann between 1885 and 1889. He died on April 9, 1902, in Berlin, Germany, at the age of 44, and was buried in Weißensee, Berlin, Germany.

When Henriette Lachmann was born on August 11, 1864, in Thorn, Prussia (now Toruń, Poland), her father, Isaac, was 47 and her mother, Mathilde Goldschmidt, was 34. She had two sons and one daughter with Louis Philipp Maass between 1885 and 1889. She died on January 16, 1918, in Schreiberhau, Germany (now Szklarska Poreba, Poland), at the age of 53, and was buried in Berlin, Germany.

Philipp Levin Maass was born on January 5, 1815, in Märkisch Friedland, his father, Lewin Philipp Maass, was 36 and his mother, Henriette Gottschalk, was 25. He had one son (that we know of so far) with Röschen Wolff on May 6, 1857. He died on June 23, 1886, in Berlin, Berlin, Germany, at the age of 71, and was buried in Pankow, Berlin, Germany.

Isaac Lachmann was born on December 17, 1816, in Graudenz, Prussia (now Grudziadz, Poland), his father, Abraham, was 22 and his mother, Henriette, was 21. He had two sons and two daughters with Mathilde Goldschmidt between 1853 and 1864. He died on September 6, 1880, in Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, at the age of 63.

Louis Philipp Maass was born in Berlin, Germany on 6 May 1857. His grandfather Lewin Philipp Maass had passed away many years earlier, and Louis was named in honor of him. Louis' mother was 33 at the time of his birth, and his parents had been married ten years.  It is likely he has other siblings.

1859 Death of Louis' Mother
When Louis was two years old, his mother passed away. Röschen Maass geb Wolff died on May 20, 1859, in Berlin, Germany, at the age of 35.

1860 Birth of Henriette's Brother
Louis Lachmann was born 28 June 1860 in Thorn. He was an architect of considerable reputation in Berlin, designing one of the city's opera houses. He also designed the building of the former department store at the corner of Fountain Jandorf / street design veterans.

1861 Death of Louis' Grandmother
Loui's paternal grandmother Henriette Ester Ernestine Maass geb Gottschalk passed away on February 25, 1861, in Bromberg, Germany, at the age of 71. Louis was three when his grandmother died.

1864 Birth of Henriette 
Henriette Lachmann was born in Thorn on 11 August 1864. Her father was Isaac Lachmann, who had ten children with his wife Mathilde Goldschmidt. His family can be traced only to his father, Abraham Lachmann, a wood merchant from Thorn (Toruń) — the birthplace of Copernicus.

Prussian King Wilhelm I was proclaimed emperor of Germany at the Palace of Versailles in France on January 18, 1871 following Prussia's victory over France. Henriette Lachmann and Louis Philipp Maass, who were living in Prussia at the time, were among the first generation of citizens to live in the German Empire.

1877 Death of Henriette’s Grandfather
Isaac Lachmann's father Abraham passed away in 1871 in Graudenz at the age of 77.

1877 Death of Henriette’s Mother
Henriette's mother Mathilde Lachmann geb. Goldschmidt passed away on August 6, 1877, in Hamburg, Germany, at the age of 47. At the time of her death, she was living at Böttgerstraße 11 in the Harvestehude district of Hamburg.  Henriette was only 12 years old at the time.

Just a few years after the death of his wife, Henriette's father Isaac Lachmann passed away on September 6, 1880, in Hamburg, Germany, at the age of 63. Henriette was only 16, and had lost both of her parents.

1884 Marriage of Louis and Henriette
On 21 March 1884, Louis Philipp Maass and Henriette Lachmann were married in Hamburg, Germany. Henriette was 19, and both of her parents were already deceased. Their first child was born in April 1885 in Berlin, so between the time of their marriage and their first child, they moved back to Louis' hometown of Berlin.  Henriette's older brother Julius Lachmann was one of the witnesses.

1885 Birth of a Son 
Louis and Henriette's first child was a son. Alfred Louis Maass was born in Berlin, Germany of 22 April 1885

1886 Death of Louis' Father
Louis Philipp's father Philipp Levin Maass passed away on June 23, 1886, in Berlin, Berlin, Germany, at the age of 71. His granddaughter, Rosa never got to meet him, as she was born less than a month after his death.

1886 Birth of a Daughter
Rosa Maass was born in Berlin, Germany on 20 July 1886.  She married Siegmund Bodenheimer 4 June 1907 in Berlin, and they had three children: Edgar, Gerda, and Helga. She was instrumental in insisting that the family leave Germany, arriving in New York in 1936. Rosa Maass Bodenheimer died in New York City on 10 December 1960.

1902 Death of Louis
At the early age of 44, Louis Philipp Maass died in Berlin, Germany on 9 April 1902. He was buried at Jüdischer Friedhof Weissensee in Berlin. His wife, Henriette was 37 at the time of his passing.

1907 Marriage of a Daughter
On 4 June 1907, Louis and Henriette's daughter, Rosa Maass married Siegmund Bodenheimer in Berlin, Germany.

1908 Birth of a Grandson
On 14 March 1908, Edgar Bodenheimer was born in Berlin. A grandson, the first grandchild of Henrietta and Louis.

1910 Death of Henriette’s Brother
Louis Lachmann committed suicide on 18 May 1910. He is buried in a large mausoleum at Jüdischer Friedhof Weissensee in Berlin. His daughter, Vera Lachmann, was only 4 years old at the time.

1911 Birth of a Granddaughter
On 4 June 1911 in Berlin, Rosa Maass Bodenheimer gave birth to a daughter, Gerda Mathilda Bodenheimer. Henriette welcomed this new grandchild into the world.

1912 Death of Henriette's Sister
Henriette's sister Minna Sachs geb Lachmann died on April 21, 1912, in Berlin, Berlin, Germany when Henriette was 47 years old. Minna was 55, and had three sons and two daughters with Immanuel Sachs.

1918 Death of Henriette 
Henriette Lachmann Maass died in Schreiberhau, Schlesien, Germany (now Szklarska Poręba, Poland) at 11:30am on 16 January 1918 at the Schindler House.  She was living in Berlin at the time, at Charlottenburg, Fasanenstraße 73, so she must have been in Schreiberhau for vacation. The area is known for its ski resorts, and January is a good snow month. It's about a 300 km train trip southeast from Berlin.

Another possibility for her death is the 1918 flu pandemic which started in January 1918 and killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide.  Her death certificate does not specifiy a cause.

Open Issues for Maass-Lachmann: 
  • Was Louis Philipp Maass really an only child?  I haven't found his 6 May 1957 birth record in Berlin yet, and it could be that there are siblings before and after.   His parents were married in 1847, and his mother died two years after he was born -- perhaps in child birth.
